First Annual Arizona Route 66 Wall of Fame Banquet

October 30, 2004

The last section of Route 66 was bypassed in Williams, Arizona on October 13, 1984. Route 66 was no more. Or was it? Somehow the celebrated Mother Road was not easily forgotten. Route 66 had become a road America – and the world – could not forget.

The day the Interstate bypassed Seligman, Arizona Route 66 through town became strangely silent. One could conceivably lay down in the middle of the road and safely take a nap! The change was that abrupt. The day before a nation on the move passed through Seligman. The Snow Cap, the Copper Cart, and the many gas stations and motor courts were thriving Route 66 businesses. All that ended the day the Interstate bypassed Seligman. Angel Delgadillo, the Seligman barber, looked over the now silent highway and vowed to do something about it. Through his efforts, the efforts of other Route 66 business owners, and fans of the Mother Road the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona was formed. It was the first association for the now historic Route 66. Other states would follow in their wake. But one thing is for sure, Arizona led the way – and the rest is Route 66 history!

Since 1987 the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona has been promoting the Mother Road throughout Arizona. The vision of one man has snowballed into an international movement. On October 30th, 2004 the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona held a banquet to honor Angel Delgadillo and other dedicated Route 66 preservationists and organizations at the Powerhouse Visitor’s Center in Kingman, Arizona. After almost two decades of service to Route 66 this was the association’s first awards ceremony, the First Annual Wall of Fame Banquet. The new Wall of Fame will be housed at the Powerhouse Visitor’s Center, and it will celebrate the contributions of the many individuals and organizations that have contributed to the preservation of the Mother Road in Arizona.

All Route 66 fans owe a debt of gratitude to these fine people – both the living and those that have passed on – for what they have done to promote and preserve Route 66.
Jim Conkle of the California Route 66 Preservation Foundation was the keynote speaker and Master of Ceremonies for this first banquet. It was a resounding success.
